PRETTY DANCING AND GOOD SINGING IMPROMPTU DEBATES There were some good sections of a diversified character to entertain the audience and puzzle the judges in the day sections taken yesterday at the Town Hall. These included dances of various kinds, generally of the order known as "fancy," which were very prettily done by children in costume, Shakespearean recittaions, sacred solo for basses or baritones, and test recitals for ladies and gentlemen. EVENING CONCERTS Tho finals taken last evening provided an entertaining boncert programme. The three recalls fob the chief piano solo were Miss Koa Oltyei' (of Dunedin), Miss L. Quinn, and Mr. Edward Tanner. Three acceptable interpretations of Chopin’s Scherzo from B Flat Minor Sonata were, given, the pointe awarded showing ’no great disparity between the contestants. In the contrtilto section Mrs. Hewitt sang very 'well indeed, and in the, character recitation, for ladiw, Miss M aisie Burt was really excellent in the potion scene from “Romeo and Juliet,” and Miss Hazel Jeffery gave a spirited .reading of Oberon s speech from "A Midsummer Night’s Dream. lhe baritones who presented themselves did not reach a. very high standard, but the New Zealand test recital produced some very fair reciters, among them Mr. C. G. Kirk, Mr. Leonard Power, and Air. Leith Riddell. There were several dances Tn duo find ballet form, all of which were pretty and entertaining. In some cases, notablv in "The Powder Puff" ballet, the dancers were very handsomely costumed, and danced with much vigour and grace. The programme concluded with impromptu debates on the subject "Should Women Propose,” in which three sets of debaters took part, with amusing results. CHILDREN’S DAY. A special children’s programme has teen ' arranged for to-day. It includes all kinds of dancing, children’s character and humorous songs and recitations, and a pianoforte test for juvenile students.
