IN AUSTRALIANS’ MATCH AGAINST THORNTON’S ELEVEN ATTRACTIVE BATTING AND FIELDING By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, September 8. The Australians to-day commenced their match against Mr. C. I. Thornton’s Eleven, awScarborough. Gregory (who is suffering from a bad knee), Carter. Mayne, and Pellew were omitted from the Australian’team. The weather was glorious and the wicket in good order and fast. Play was interesting, and gen-. erally was marked by a freshness suggesting rather the beginning than tho end of a tour. The crowd was enthusiastic at the crisp batting and attractive fielding. Saiidham and Rhodes opened to M'Donald and. Armstrong. Both batsmen were good, and scored several boundaries. Mailey relieved M'Donald at 23, and at 28 Rhodes stopped one from Armstrong with his leg. Hearne was next. Before 50 was reached, Hendry and M’Donald went on, and runs came freely till Hearne gave Oldfield a chance. Two for 84. M'Donald’s second over proved fatal to Mead. Woolley joined Sandham at 93, and tho century appeared for 110 minutes’ play. The pair made an attractive and lively partnership, adding 47. Then M'Donald found Sandham’s wicket. Hendren fell to Hendry. Five for 143. At this stage there were some quick Ixjwling changes. Woolley was dismissed by a smart catch by Mailey off Oldfield’s pads at 148. Fender lost his wicket in trying a. big hit. Seven for 156. Douglas and Jupp were confident, and played brisk cricket, undeterred by the variations in the attack. Jupp escaped stumping off Mailey when ho was. I<. Three runs later he gave a second similar chance, which was accepted. Eight for 195. Hitch was going well, and hit three consecutive fours off M'Donald, who was bowling with a new ball. He then miss-hit, and was caught at midon. Nine for 222. Douglas made 50 in ninety minutes. The last wicket was interesting, and added 54 in half an hour. Douglas was caught out in mak- ■ ing a big hit. He was slow in starting, but when he warmed up he gave a good and sound display. The crowd greeted him with "Good old Johnny!” With forty minutes to go the Australians opening pair. Bardsley and Collins, kept their wickets intact against the bowling of Hitch and Fender.
