Parr) is expected to return to Wellington on Monday. Tho Hon. G. J. Anderson, who has been in the Bowen Street Hospital for Several weeks, is reported to be xnaking better progress after another operation. The Minister - of Industries and Commerce (Hon E. ( P. lice) has returned to Wellington from Auckland. Six - William Merries will .return to Wellington to-day after a visit to Tauvanga. •

Bishop Cleary, of Auckland, will he a passenger for London by the Rimutaka next Tuesday.

His Honour Mr. Justice Herdman was farowelled by members of the Westland Bax- nt the conclusion of last Wednesday's sitting of the Supreme Court. Mr. 11. W. Kitchingham, president of the Westland branch of the Law Society, expressing regret at Mr. Justice Herdman’s departure, said that, in following His Honour .Sir John Denniston, Mr. Justice Herdman had accepted a difficult position, but his experience as Atorney-Gjen-ei-al had stood him in good stead. Mr. J. Park, senior member of the Hokitika Bar, said that, while on the Coast, Mr. Justice Herdman had been called on to decide mining cases which established important precedents. Mr. Justice. Herdman sincerely thanked the Westland Bar fox- its expressions of good will. He was leaving for 1 tho north after four years’ association with them in the administration of justice, and he x-egretted doing so. The Rot. Archibald E. Hunt, minister of the Cambridge Terrace Congregational Church, and secretary of the Congregational Union of New Zealand, has tendered his resignation, with a view to entering the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. The • resignation, which will take effect in Noveinbex- next, has been received with very deep regret. The following resolution was passed at a meeting of tlxe trustees of the Wellington Society for Relief of the Aged Needy held yesterday: “That the trustees have received with sincere and deep, regret tho nexvs of the death of Mr. J. G. W. Aiitkeii, who from September, 1897, until tho time of his death, was a valued member of this board of trustees, and for a considerable period was its honoured and highly respected chairman. This board desires to express its sincere sympathy with the relatives in their bereavement, 'and also to place on record its appreciation of tho great worth of Mr. Aitken’s service as a citizen and trustee of this institution."

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of tho late Mr. J. R. Stansell was passed at tho meeting of the I.yall Bay Electors’ Association on Thursday. The late Mr. Stansell took a deep interest in afl'idi-a concerning I.yall Bay. The death took place at Wellington recently, at tho age of 66, of Mr. James William M'Call, who arrived here in the ship Carlvale early In 1875. On arrival in Wellington he followed his calling as plumber with the firm of Ballinger Bros., later on cominexicing in business for himself in Taranaki Street, after which ho moved to Blenheim, and later io Palmerston North, hero ho was in business for a numbei- of years. Ho retired eleven years ago to live in Wellington. Ho leaves a wife and family of four sons and one daughter. The sons are Messrs. James ißongotea), Alexandex- (Ashburton). John (Palmerston North), Thomas (Raetihx), and the daughter Mrs. W. Browne (Wanganui). Two eons lost their lives during tbs war.
