TRAMWAY CONCESSION TICKETS

WORKERS’ FARES CABINET DECIDES AGAINST CHANGE \ “AN INOPPORTUNE TIME” j During the last financial year the City Council, in going closely Into figures concerning tramways cost, ascertained that in order to preserve the rights of certain workers (who had to reach their places of employment hy 8 a.m.) to concessions in faros, other patrons of the tramways had to pay more than the ordinary fare. In short, one section of the public was penalised to make concessions possible to others. To rectify this, it was necessary to alter the Order-tn-Council, and the Minister of Public -Works (Hon. J. G. Coates) was waited upon some week* ago by the Mayor and chief officials of the council with a request for a change which would make the faros more uniform to all classes of the community. Yesterday tho Mayor (Mr. B. A. Wright) received the following letter from the Minister:— "Referring to tho interview which you nnd the City Council officers had with me relative to draft Ordewn-Council No J 3 Wellington City Council, particularly in’ regard to the proposed exclusion of workers’ concession fares. I have now to advise you that Cabinet hns very carefully considered your representations In the matter, but it is regretted that the present appears to be an time', so far as workers are concerned to deprive them of the privileges they have so long enjoyed ' When questioned by a reporter, tl Mayor said he had no comment to make upon tho Ministerial dictum.
