EASTERN SUBURBS LEAGUE
The report of the Rastern Suburbs Citizens’ League for the year ending June 30. states that during the year 1 many matters of interest to the city generally, and the eastern suburbs in particular, were brought before the league, and discussed. and good results were gained in many instances, while in some the league were not so successful as they could have wished. Tho most- satisfactory result the league is able to report is in regard to longdistance telephone charges. Mainly owing to representations made to the Post-master-General by a. deputation from the league, considerable reductions in the increased charges for long-distance telephones were made. A reduction was also brought about in fire insurance rates, nnd a request has been forwarded to extend tbc concession to an area in Melrose. Other subjects discussed during the y'ar included proposed new tramway power house at Shag Point, workers’ concession tickets. Oity Council loan proposals. tramway board of management, town .planning. Oity Council, Mayoral, Harbour Board, and Hospital Board biennial elections. In regard to the loan proposals, the league heartily supported them, and worked to bring about a successfii 1 poll . ■ x, A matter that is now engaging the league’s attention is the proposal to form a civic league for the city and suburbs. A preliminary meeting has been held, and a provisional committee set up to report to a future meeting. The balance-sheet shows a balance or 13s. 9d.
