The report seems to cover the ground very fully, and. little fault can be found with it. The acceptances received for the three principal events at the C.J.C. winter meeting are surprisingly good, and especially is this the case in the National Steeplechase, which hns drawn a field of sixteen, but several of them are doubtless being sent to the meeting more with the hope of winning one of tho minor steeplechases than the big event. The Gisborne Racing Club’s winter meeting will take place on Thursday and Saturday of this week. There has been a reshuffling of trainers at Trentham since the winter meeting. A. M'Aulay has given up the team owned by Mr. W. Higgins, and has taken chargo of Mr. H. W. Browne’s horses. Mr. Higgins’s team is now under the care of J. Farmer and J. Crawford. It does not often happen that father and son ride a winner the same day at the same meeting, but F. Bullock and his son, F. L., each scored a win at Hurst Park, on May 17. It was youthful Bullock’s first victory, and it was with a last-moment rush on Jack o Lantern that beat Gap, ridden by the crack jockey, S. Donohue, a head m the Molesey Two-year-old Selling Race. Ihe stewards thought Donohue was caught napping, and asked for an explanation. They accepted his statement that he thought he had won. Tho race won by Bullock senior later in the afternoon was the Whitsuntide Plate on Goldendale. Battle Scene did not do at all well on the trip to Trentham, and her trainer, S. Trilford, has decided to give her ft few weeks’ spell. She will not bo raced at the Grand National meeting, but she will be t-iken in hand again after that fixture, with a view to engagements in tho spring. Another attempt is to be made to get Simonides to jump, nnd at the conclusion of the Gisborne meeting K Copestake will go to Hawera to school the Demosthenes gelding. The Hawk is doing useful work at Hastings, and it is the intention ot his trainer to give him a race at Marton and then take him north tor tho Avondale Guineas, where ho will throw down tho gauntlet to Mermin. After a spell of a couple of months Maioha lias again commenced work at Hastings, under L. Wilson. Ihe chestnut gelding looks really well after his spell, and will be nominated for the Avondale Cup. Mr. James Bull, who usually patronises the C-J.C. winter meeting, will not have any of liis team racing at next month s fixture. Omaliu had a very hard time at Ellerslie and Wellington, Ngata is still sore, nnd Ruddy was not deemed good enough to go south. Apparently Tigerland has got over the cold he developed at the Dannevirke Hunt Club’s meeting, as the chestnut has been entered for the minor steeplechases at the C.J.C. National meeting. Although Strategy has been taken out of tho Winter Cup he is to be sent south with Prince Martian, and will race on the second and third days of the Riccartou meeting. Hard Hit, one of the fancied division amongst tho light-weights in the Grand National Steeplechase, has also bean entered for the Trial Hurdles and Jumpers’ Flat Handicap, which arc run on the same day as the big Steeplechase. The well-known black gelding More Anthony v.as seized by illness on lucsday, and, despite the prompt application of veterinary attention, died on Wednesday morning. His death is reported to have resulted from intestinal complications. Ho was held on lease by Mr. W. Stone of Invercargill, from Mr. K. Bain, of Christchurch.
