AUSTRALIAN WHEAT POOL
MOTION FOR CONTINUANCE CARRIED BY HOUSE.
Melbourne, July 23.
Mr. Charlton moved an amendment to Mr. Gregory’s motion, that the Country Party was to blame for not supporting the Labour Party’s amendment on the wheat question earlier in the week. The amendment was defeated by 28 votes to 12, and Mr. Gregory’s motion—" That the continuance of the pool for 1921-22 „is necessary in tho interests of growers — was carried on the voices. [lt was announced a few weeks ago bv Sir Joseph Cook, Acting-Primo Minister,’ that the Government was opposed to another wheat pool, and fully approved the South Australian decision against a compulsory pool. Later, ho stated that unless all the States agreed to tho proposed wheat pool the I‘cderal Government would not assist. On July 20 the Labour Party tabled a no-contl-dence motion on the question of granting supply, "providing the Government take steps to ensure the continuance of tho wheat pool.” This was defeated by 28 votes to 11, the Country Party voting with the Government. Mr. Gregory subsequently announced that hi view the truce between the Country 1 arty and the Government, tho party could not do otherwise. Later, he mud ho would 'move a motion dealing with the wheat question.]
