FRENCH DIPLOMACY

VIEWED WITH MISGIVING IN LONDON NEAR EAST SITUATION MORE COMPLICATED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, July 22. British official circles view with misgiving certain tendencies of recent French diplomatic moves. There is evidence that ’ the postponement of the Supreme Council meeting forced the pace in Upper Silesia in Poland’s favour, and of an apparent endeavour to play off Britain against Turkey. Britain has long endeavoured to give Turkey the best possible settlement, owing to her desire to placate Indian and Moslem opinion, but France has created the impression that she is outbidding Britain, though it Is extremely doubtful whether Francs is anxious to give Turkey any real powers. France’s attitude is believed to have partly provoked the recent truculence of the Angora Government. The Greek victories in Asia Minor are likely to further complicate the situation’ by making it difficult for Britain to secure the settlement in the Near East for which she is aiming.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. SITUATION SILESIA DISASTER FEARED BY GERMANY. (Rec. July 23. 5-5 p.m.) London, July 22. Berlin advices state that Herr Gradnauer, Minister of the Interior, in a statement, said that disaster was impending In Upper Silesia unless a statement, said that the disaster was tente.
