A Press Association message from Auckland reports the death of the Rev. G. B. Munro, at the age of 73. He retired in 1918, when he had been for forty years minister of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, Remuera. Mr. F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-. Chief and Under-Secretary of 'the Public Works Department, returned to Wellington from Poverty Bay on Friday. Dr. Hutson has resigned his position as medical superintendent of tho Wanganui Hospital. Mr. F. W. Mansfield, formerly assistant and Official Assignee of Wellington, and later Registrar-General, died at his residence. Crescent Road, Khandallah, on Thursday last, to the great regret of all who knew him. Mr. Mansfield entered the Public Service as a teacher under the Canterbury Education Board, in which employ he w r as engaged from 1873 to 1881. when he came to Wellington as master of the Terrace School. Owing to indifferent health he gave up the teaching profession, and joined the old Property Tax Department as a clerk in 1883. He did not, however, remain long there, as he was transferred to the office of tho Official Assignee (then Mr. James Ashcroft). Later he went to Christchurch' in the same Department, and in 1897 was appointed Registrar of Births. Deaths, and Marriages for the City of Wellington and Registrar of Electors. In 1905 he was made chief electoral officer, and four years later he succeeded Mr. von Dadelszen as Regis-trar-General. which office he held till his retirement from the service in November. 1916. His wife predeceased him some years ago, but he loaves an adult family. As chief registrar of electors he. on behalf of the Government, visited Tasmania some years ago to report on tho system of preferential voting which that State had adopted. Mr. Mansfield s report on the then new system was against its adoption in New Zealand. Mr. Mansfield wa.s a keen bowler, and for many years was a popular member .of tho Khandallah Club, of which he was at one time the president. His funeral on Saturday morning was very largely attended by members and exmembers of tho Civil Service and personal friends.

Amongst the passengers from Sydney bv the Manuka yesterday was Miss Freda Sternberg, who is visiting the Dominion as a publicity representative for Alexander Watson. Miss Sternberg is staying at the Hotel Windsor.* The death of Captain Russell Jaggard, of tho New Zealand Shipping Company, is mentioned in an exchange. Captain Jaggard had many friends in New Zaland, having been on the New Zealand "run” for over twenty years. Tho condition of Mr. Knox. Gilmer is still causing his friends anxiety. The report yesterday afternoon was that there was a very (slight improvement, but his condition was still serious.

Canon Dart arrived yesterday from Sydney by the Manuka. It is stated that Mr. D. S. Bedingfield, headmaster of the Petone West School, has been offered the position of headmaster of the Petone District High School, now vacant through the resignation of Mr. C. N. Haslam. Mr. Acland arrived from Sydney yesterday by the Manuka. Mr Donkin, of the New Zealand Aero Transport Company, Tirnnru. was a passenger from Sydney by the Manuka yesterday.

Mr. W. J. Roche, of 'Wellington, has been appointed engineer to tho Stratfoid Borough Council. An Oamarii Press Association message states that Dr. Hargreaves nnd Mr. E A. Lawrence have been re-elected unop posed ns parents’ representatives on the Waitaki High School Board of Governors.
