WAIRARAPA V. WELLINGTON FORMER WIN BY 4 JO 3 By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Masterton, July 23. Tho Wellington-Wairarapa senior hockev match was played in wretched weather at Masterton this afternoon: _ A cold, wind blew, and rain fell at intervals. The ground was heavy, and conditions in general wero most unfavourable. Nevertheless the game was interesting nnd exciting. Wellington lacked combination in the first spell. Their passing was erratic, and they were never suie with their hitting. They played a much better game in the second spell. The teams were as follow. —Wellington—Goal: Hunter; full-backs, Harper, Thorpe; halves, M'lntosh, Trilford, Scott; forwards, Wilsoi>, Johns, Stratton Smith. Phillpotts. Wairarapa—Goal, Ordish: full-backs, C. Bannin, Dixon; halves. W. Bannin, Neilsen, Livingstone; forwards, Nyhan, Foster, Thompson, Tunnicliffe, Devonport. Wairarapa swept to tho allack by a good forward rush, in which some smart stick work was shown. Wairarapa started passing early in the game, and endangered goal repeatedly. Thorne and Harper had a busy time defending. Tunnicliffe, Devenport,, and Nyhan shone out for good work, and it was mainly through them that Wellington were kept busy defending. A smart bit of -work by Harper was followed b v a good rush by Wilson and Smith, but Dixon cleared. Trilford and Scott came away, but Livingstone intercepted, and found the line well down. Some vigorous plav took place in the centre of the field. Phillpotts and Smith doing well for Wellington, and Tunnicliffe and Nyhan for Wairarapa, who made the pace fast their forwards being very smart on the heavy ground. Tunnicliffe, Nyhan, and Devonport put in some great work, but Wellington’s defence was sound. Good stick work relieved Wellington, but Tunnicliffe. Nyhan, Thompson, and Livingstone were associated in a, vigorous attack, which Wellington was hard put to it to ward off. Wairarapa broke away, and Tunnicliffe, from a clever niece of work, scored. Wairarapa, 1; Wellington, 0. Some give-and-take play followed, in which Smith, Wilson, and Phillpotts did good work for M ellington. Fast play by the Wairarapa forwards was followed by a smart run down the line by Nyhan, who centred, giving Thompson hie chance to score. Almost immediately afterwards Thompson again scored and Wairarapa were three goals up. Scott. Johns, nnd Wilton were noticeable for some good work for M ellington, who now livened up. Iwarana’s defence was sound, and though Wellington kept up the pressure, it was not for soma time that their efforts were rewarded, Scott scoring a good goal. Half-time sounded with the score: Wairarapa, 3; Wellington, 1. In the second spell, Wellington played much better, being smarter and cleaner in their work. They started off with repeated attacks, which were nullified by Wairarapa’s sound defence. The play of the "Wellington backs now gave the front line better support than in the first spell. After a good deal of give-and-take play, Wellington set up a determined attack, and eventually Johns broke through. Shortly afterwards Smith scored for Wellington. With the scores even plav became very vigorous, and eventually, from a good piece of play, Thompson notched a goal for Wairarapa. Wellington then redoubled their efforts. Wilson, Smith, Johns, and Scotcame away repeatedly, and narrowly missed scoring. Wairarapa defended stoutly. They made an onslaught on the Wellington goal, and this was followed bv a Wellington attack, led by Smith. Both sides struggled hard, and the final bell rang with Wairarapa the victors bv 4 goals to 3. , i ■ The Wellington players were entertained to-night at a dinner and a dance.
