S. P. C. A.
The fortnightly meeting of the S.P.C.A. Committee was held on Monday the president (Mr. F. Meftdowcroft) presiding over a full attendance of members. A letter was received from Mr. T. T. Hugo enclosing a cheque for £5 in continuation of the late Mrs. Hugo’s annual donation for the nurpose of an essay competition, tho subject being “The Humane Treatment to Dumb Animals.” It was resolved that the essay competition be held as usual, and a sub-committee was appointed to draw up conditions. CorreRpondence was considered from the Christchurch S.P.C.A. on the questions of the proposed amendment to the Polce Offences Act regarding cruelty to animals. The matter was left in the hands of the inspector to report. Collections totalling to £3 3s. 6d. were acknowledged, including £1 2s. fid., from the Levin District High School Junior League.
The inspector reported on various cases that he had looked into. Several letters were received from schools regarding the Junior League, which showed that the league was flourishing in a very satisfactory manner. It was decided to invite antillcations for a, canvasser and collector for the society in place of Miss Wignall (resigned).
