REPATRIATION

FINANCIAL STRINGENCY BEING I’EJZT. At last week’s meeting of the Ministerial Board, the Director of Repatriation. (Mr. J. R. Samson) submitted a statement showing that the present depression in trade throughout the Dominion had affected, to some extent, the collection •of moneys loaned to discharged soldiers who had been started in business, etc. The figures, however, still show quite a satisfactory position, for, on a percentage basis the Department has succeeded in collecting X9I Bs. Gd. for every .£lOO accrued due, the total collection to date amounting to -£549,352. Although a number of men have not. proved as successful in business ns they anticipated, the great majority are doing excellently, and the director mentipned to the board at its last meeting tho case of 'two brothers who returned from the war and were granted a loan of .£6OO by the Department in .Tuly, 1919, <o take over n country store business. They put their savings, amounting to .£2OO each, into the business, and have been making regular repayments every month, and last week paid off the remainder of the XGOO they had borrowed from the Department, and had in addition a balance of £l3OO standing to their credit at the bank.
