WOOL REALISATION
PROGRESS OF THE SCHEME CLOSING OF THE AMERICAN MARKET The wool realisation scheme is proceeding. tillite smoothly at present, under the direction of the New Zealand Wool Committee. Brokers and farmers appear to have accepted the scheme fully. The quantity of wool that is being realised at the successive sales is not as large as both producers and brokers would like it to be, but in the opinion of experts freedom from control would not enable tho market to absorb a largely increased quantity unless the farmers were prepared to accept prices that would scarcely pay tne cost of handling. American buyers have not been operating to any extent at recent sales. The reason for their abstension is to be found in the new United States tariff, which imposes an amost prohibitive dutyon imported wool. The tariff has not taken, its final form yet, and the agarian interests, which are behind the Republican Party in the demand for increased protection of primary industries, may not have matters all their own way when tho full effect of the tariff ’.n. increasing the price of woollen goods in the United! States is realised. But at present there is ft big surplus of wool within, tho United States, and until this accumulated stock is consumed Americans are not likeiy to bo buying abroad except in certain special lines.
