4 POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES. A number of inebriates appeared in the Magirfrete’s Court yesterday before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Seven firet-offenders, who failed to appear. forfeited their bai] of 10s. each. W. 0. Fisher and E. R. Laurence, each with one previous conviction, were fined 2(M. each. Alexander G. Dickson, a seaman, was charged with the use of obscene language. It was stated that he wont into a restaurant in Manners Street on Saturday in a drunken condition, and wanted a ’meal. This was refused because he was drunk, and he then became abusive and used obscene language towards tho proprietor. Dickson was convicted and fined 20s.‘ and costs', in default three davs’ imprisonment. Robert Jefferies, a. young man, was charged with the. theft of a handbag value £2 and .£2l 2s. in money, the jiroperiy of Ellen Wilson. On the application of Sub-Inspector Willis ho was remanded io Wednesday. Bail was allowed in one surety of T5O or two of ,£25 each. James Cain, a seaman, was charged with failing to comply with the terms of his probation order. Cain was convicted in March last of the theft of a fur cont and was placed on probation, one of the conditions being that he should report periodically to the probation officer (Mr. Mills). The latter stated that Cain had not reported to him for a considerable tim*; he could ’have done fjo bv letter, had he been out of Wellington. Cain said he was at sea nnd could not report regularly. He was fined +o’., with the option of fourteen days’ imprisonment. MAINTENANCE CASES. Benjamin B. Whitburn, whose arrears in respect to fl maintenance order amounted to .£7 Is., was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be snsysondoA for seven days. William H. Bowater, Whose arrears Fotnlled .£162. was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as 355. per week is paid.
