A remarkable illustration of the fact that human witness is not always reliable occurred at Auckland on Wednesday in a refreshment r.oum not u great distance from Queen Street. Four people were present, and thq attendant was rather busy. One of the customers was waiting to pay the bill, and for possibly live minutes he handles! a ten-shilling note, placing it upon the counter, picking it up again, unfolding- it, and tinally replacing it where the attendant oould pick it up. Tho other three saw the whole proceeding, and when the owner of the note finally called the attendant the bill was taken and change of half-a-crown given. Instantly the four people questioned the change. The man behind tho counter said positively he had not received the note, and, looking in the till, ho stated further that there was no ten-shilling note there at all. After some argument he produced the full change for ton shillings, but still denied that he hud taken the money. Each of the four people in the group expressed themselves ns absolutely positive that e had, and, diving his hand into his pocket to prove that lie had no other change, but only lire note, the payer produced—tho sama note. All were profuse in their apologies to the attendant. who took tue explanation like a gentleman, although he had been virtually accused of thieving the money. He had given the party ths change from half-a-orowii paid by somebody else.
