RURAL MAILS
NEW DELIVERY SYSTEM CONTEMPLATED. By Telegraph.-Presn Association. Dannevirke, J,uly 8. According to information supplied to Mr.' A. M’Nicol, M.P., by the Hon. J. G. Coates, Postmaster-General, his Department is contemplating an important change in the system of rural deliveries. The present method is unsatisfactory, because it. involves settlers in outlyingdistricts in heavy cost. It was found that some settlers took the benefits of delivery, but allowed their neighlxiurs to pay. The Department found this both expensive and unsatisfactory, and . w:is considering a scheme that would institute a uniform rate throughout New Zealand. This would relieve the burden on the back-block settlers, and place the rural mail delivery somewhat on the same level as post office boxes in towns. Mr. Coates stated that a study of rural mail deliveries iu other countries showed that they all lia<l unsatisfactory features, and involved heavy expenditure. What was proposed in New Zealand was quite new. Ho hopeel shortly io make an official statement that would fully explain the scheme.
