ISLAND BAY AFFAIRS

COMPLETION OF TRAM TRACK

The monthly meeting of tho Island Bay Ratepayers’ Association was held on Thursday night, when there was a good attendance of members. Ilia principal business of the meeting was the presentation of the report front the deputation that waited on the Mayor regarding duplication of the tram track, and foreshore improvements. „ Members expressed regret at “the unsatisfactory nature of the Mayor's reply to the deputation regarding the tram track." Ono of the reasons given, viz., the shortage of sleepers, the meeting considered beside the point, as the. association's committee had been informed !>.’. timber merchants in Wellington tn<it they could supply hardwood timber for sleepers within ten days. In any case, lhe reply was considered beside the point, or. the ground that as cement was now available hardwood sleepers were n->t necessary. The second explanation, v ■ /., that money was short, was much criticised bv speakers, who stated that the material was already lying on the job. and that all that was wanted was a diversion of labour from some less necessary work It was suggested that p.st now it was more essential to complete the tram track, and thus increa-o revenue. than it was to use J“bou’’ for chopping grass and weeds off outlying roads. ■ . . The deputation's report regarding foreshore improvements was considered rather startiirg. The following statements were made:—(l) That members of the Reserves Committee had stated that no plans had been drawn showing the proposed improvements; that this uas contrary- to fact, in that plans were drawn up bv Mr. Paterson, the assistant city engineer, and approved by Air. Alorton on his return from abroad; (2) that the plans showed a small park, shrubberies, the widened road and a paddling pool for children; (3) that there were reports of the council lifting some of the proclau ations that had been placed on property needed for the above improvements. These matters the meeting discussed, and if was resolved to send a small deputation of the association to wait on the officers to ascertain; (1) What was the actual area already purchased by the ; council? (2) What proclamations now stood on properties near the foreshore. (3) Whnt proclamations, if any, had been lifted?
