LOYALTY IN THE SCHOOLS. The new regulation recently foreshadowed by the Minister of Education, dealing with ihe development of loyalty in the schools, is published in this week’s Gazette. It reads as follows:— “The instruction in history and civics shall aim at instilling in boys and girls love for their country and pride m the achievements of the race throughout the Empire Loyaltv should be a dominant note, and the lessons should be selected and presented in such a way ns to my stress on the need for sympathetic cooperation not only on the part of the various Dominions within the Empire, but on Ihe part of every section of f ie community within which we live. ihe inculcation of patriotism or loyalty to King and country and io lofty ideals readily finds a basis in British history "Tn this connection lessons of a celebrational character are.-of the utmost importance, and anniversaries such as Anzac Dav and Empire Day should be devoted to special lessons appropriate to the theme. In addition, at every celebration and nt the beginning or end of each school week the New Zealand flag or the Union Jack, is to be saluted and the National Anthem sung by teachers and pupils in the presence, where possible, of the whole school.
