NOTES AND COMMENTS Bv GIINCOIS. After his good showing at Hastings, a. well-known, owner was anxious for a price to be -put ou Insurrection, but. J. W. Lowe declined to treat for tho purchase of tho Kilbroney gelding, who is to .bo taken by his owner to Melbourne some time next xvOek.

Mr. Eric R'iddifo-rd’s colt by Absurd from Moira, Maohreq, and Chakuwana, were, recently operated upon by veterinary A. M. Brodie. Tho formed will race as Marboughal and tho latter as Karutahi. There are not many apprentices riding over hurdles in this country, but one of 'this category, L. Berry, rode Powder King, winner of both hurdle races at Hastings. Powder King, who is trained by J. Lyford at Napier, hae made a lot of improvement of late, and should easily pay his way during the winter.

The unlucky horse in tho Burke Alomorial Handicap on Thursday, was the chestnut,. Gold . Kip. His rider failed to jump off with the rest of the field, and was very badly placed over the first half of the journey, but he did, well at the finish, and got into third place in the big field of 16 horses. The Trentham-irained Flight Commander and Solfanello were taken to Hastings, but neither showed to advantage. The cup candidate ran well in the rear on the first day, and was not produced again. Solfanello was proclaimed as a winner in the Porangahou Handicap, but he failed to finish on, and did no better at his next attempt, lie has done a lot of racing and travelling, and is probably in need of a let up. Lord Muskerry, winner of the Akit’io Handicap at tho Hawke’s Bay meeting, was offered at auction on the morning of (he race, but'no one wanted 1 him. A feature of the racing at Hastings on Thursday, was the riding of H. Gray and A. Reed, each of whom rode three winners in succession. The prevailing depression did not effect the totalisator returns at Hastings,

but it had a serious effect on the blood stock sales, and when Air. F. Ross offered his team at auction on Thursday, the various lots did not elicit a single bid. Later on there were inquiries for .Salute, and Soulterina, but no sale sulted.Alermin has re-established himself in favour, and he is again being' proclaimed the best 2-year-old of tlie year. He stripped very well at Hastings, and though burdened with lOst. 81b., and an outside position at the barrier, he soon headed the field and from the home turn he was under a strong pull. There was a gap- of two lengths between the top weight land the second horse at the finish, and it is now plain that Mermin should have gone into winter retirement with a unbeaten certificate. The suspension of R.’ Reed for three months for crossing in the Hawke’s BayStakes is regarded in some quarters as being out of all proportiion to the offence, especially as on -another metropolitan course exactly the same offence was punished by a fine of £lO. There are certain extenuating circumstances in (lie case of Reed, for The Hawk, who caused the trouble, is suffering from a bad mouth. Efforts are to be made to get the Judicial Committee at Hastings to review the sentence, which means a heavv financial loss. Loveinatch was a good favourite in the Hawke’s Bay Cup, and after a very chequered passage, she finished itQ fifth place, a 'head- behind' Sunart. On the next day, she went out at a long figure, but. favoured with a perfect run the whole way. she scored leisurely from Verbosity, who set a fast pace the whole way. Loveinatch has been doling smart work on the fracks, but when she failed the first day the public soon dropped her.

Throe horses arrived by the Remuera ved-erday from England for Messrs, Lowry and J. B, Reid'.
