MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE PROCEEDINGS. The police business in tho Magistnte’s Court yesterday was taken by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. Timothy Murphy was charged with failing to provide adequate maintenance for his wife and three children nt Hokitika. He was remanded to appear at Hokitika on February 25. William Garner was charged that on January 9 he stole an alarm clock, .a pair of nickelplated spurs, and a claw hammer, value 36., the property of Michael Sheehan. Mr. A.” B. Sievwriglit appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. After hearing evidence the Magistrate dismissed the information. For selling meat unfit for human consumption, Charles Ilueston was fined .£lO and costs Ils. Herbert Stanbridgo was convicted of being the owner of a dangerous dog and was ordered to keep the animal under proper control, also to pay costs. James Battersby and James Read were charged with cruelly ill-treating a horse on the information of Inspector Henry, of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In, consequence of a complaint, Inspector Henry went to Rona Bay and found a horse suffering from a sore shoulder attached to the bus running between Muritai and Rona Bay. Read, the driver of the vehicle, was or. dered to release the animal as soon as possible, but on the next trip the inspector' found that the horse was still being worked, and that a makeshift pad had been placed in tho collar. Battersby, the owner of the horse, denied that there was anything serious in the condition of the 'horse or that it was suffering pain. The Magistrate convicted both defendants and said the offence was not a very serious one. They ’were fined 20s. and 7s. costs each.
