POULTRY NOTES

Poultry Industry. Whilo in Christchurch this week, the lion. It. Moore, M.L.C., introduced a deputation to the lion. W. J’. Massey, consisting of Mr. li. M. Isitt, M.P., Mr. A. F. Drayton (chairman of tne Canterbury llepatriation Board), and several discharged soldiers engaged in the poultry industry, on the subject of the prohibition of the importation ot egg pulp from Asia. Air. Drayton said that part of the work of the board had been to establish discharged soldiers on poultry farms, and twenty-nine had been so established; there were two blind soldiers and thirty-two T.B. men receiving instruction In poultry farming at Cashmere Sanatorium, and at Avoii- . head. If the importation of Asiatic egg pulp was not prohibited, many of the discharged soldiers would have to throw up their farms. In 1917 the importations of egg pulp from Asia were valued at £17,010; in 1920 they hud increased to £42,000. Two members of the deputation, discharged soldiers who had taken up poultry runs, supplemented Mr. Drayton s reMr. isitt said that very largely he went in for free-trade, and he was not prepared to go in for the prohibition of articles that could not be produced in the Dominion at a reasonable rate. 110 did no; believe that there was a country in the world better suited for poultry farming than New Zealand, and the only opposition to the prohibition of the importation of egg pulp came from a few pastrycooks and confectioners. If the prohibition were effected, he knew of poultry farmers who would double their existing large plants. The discharged soldiers who had spoken had not exaggerated matters, and unless the prohibition were imposed a. number of them would have to go out; as a matter of fact, a number of poultry farmers, not discharged soldiers, had gone out already. Mr. Massey. "I-have no sympathy at all—not the slightest—with the importation of Asiatic egg pulp. The real difficulty in dealing with the matter ,is the necessity for legislation.’’ He added that the matter would be taken in hand as soon aa he returned to Wellington, and he would see if it was possible to prohibit the importation of Asiatic egg pulp without au amendment of the law; if it could be done without amending the law, he would see that it was done They could rest assured that they had the sympathy of the Government in the matter. Ho urged poultry farmers generally (more par ticularly those in districts where there were no large areas of wheat) to go in for raising feed for their poultry.
