MASTERTON RAM FAIR OPENED YESTERDAY GOOD ATTENDANCE OF BUYERS , By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. ~ Masterton, February 17. The annual rani fair, held' under the auspices of the Masterton. A. and P. Association, was commenced to-day. Stud and flock Lincolns and flock Ryelands, Leiceeters, and Shropshires were put up for auction. There was a good attendance of buyers, but bidding was only noticeably brisk when sheep of the moro favoured vendors were being offered. Thirty sheep were entered in the section for stud Lincoln rams, but one pen was not brought forward. Prices ranged from Ggns. for a three-shear ram up to tlfens. paid to Percy Bros, for a oneshear ram bought by W. Rayner. Other prices were: On account William Perry and Sons: One-shear ram -iOgns., bought by G. V. Smith, Gisborne; one-shear ram, Signs., W. IT. Beetham. On account. Bland Rayner: One-shear, 30gns.; one-shear, 26gns.; one-shear, Signs. In many cases the reserves were so high that the sheep were passed in. Tn the case of a ram bred by A. D M'Master, a bid of 35gns. was refused. Bland Rayner refused bids of 30gns. and 20gns. The highest price of tho day was 90gns., paid for a one-shear Southdown ram, bred and entered by H. J. Andrew, Mahino, Canterbury. Robert Buick, Masterton, was the purchaser. All Mr. Ani drew's sheep were bid for briskly, and realised such prices as 42gns. (W. IT. Buick), Signs. (A. J. Speedy), 30gns. (R. F. R. Beetham). .Tames Knight, oi Eeilding, received 70gns. for a one-shear ram bought by R. M. Perry, Masterton, and 42gns. for another one-shear ram. A bid of 70gns. was. refused by Mr. Knight for a champion. Lincoln College had two entries, for which 31 gms. and 20gns. respectively wore received. Tho lowest price paid was llgns. Some, lines were not put up, and'others were: passed, no bids being forthcoming. Sixty-two pens of flock Lincolns were entered. The first pens to be offered were the first three prize pons in connection with the show. Tho first-prize pen, on account of Percy Bros.,- realised llgns The second prize pen, also on account of Percy Bros, and the third, on account of Robert M'Gregor. failed to reach the reserve. The range of prices was from llgns. to 71gns. Some of the prices were:— 7gns., GJgtis,, sgns., 4-igns., 3gns., 22gns., 2|gns., 2’gns. I ery few lines were sold, the auctioneers failing to elicit bids. / Tn flock Southdown rains, the first prize pen, on account of IV. H. Booth, was bought by C. Bennett ior 12gns. Sir Walter Buchanan paid the same price for the second prize pen and lOJgns. for tho third prize pen to Quentin Donald and N. Rayner respectively. Southdowns went off better than the Lincolns, the range of prices being from sjgns. to 131gns. A majority of the sales were made at from fens, upwards. The sheep of IT. J. That on (account oi Holmes Warren was not put up, while fifteen rams bred by T. A. Stevens brought 61gns. A‘pen of flock English Leicester rams, bred by Duncan Matheson, fetched 2gns. James Johns was the only vendor of Shropshire rams. He received flgns. for a pen of five. Out of nineteen pens of Southdown ewes entered, bids were qnly registered on three. James Knight, of Feilding, obtained sgns. for 5 one-shear sheep and Agns. for another lot. Bids of 2)gns. were refused by R. Buick. The rest of tho pens were raced through the ring. BURNSIDE STOCK MARKET ■ By TelcgreplusrFress Association. Dunedin, February 16. Large yardings were tho order in all departments of fat stock at Burnside today. Owing to the labour trouble at the local freezing works, freezing buyers were somewhat aloof in their bidding, as difficulty was anticipated in getting the stock slaughtered. Rigs were in large supply, and sold at reduced rates. It was noticed that a representative of a firm new to Burnside was operating for sheep and lambs, chiefly the latter. Fat Sheep—A full yarding, numbering 3314 head of fair quality, was offered, Competition was slack. Export buyers operations were of a very restricted character resulting in lower prices having to be accepted. Prime wethers realised from 325. to 385., medium 265. 6d. to 315., lieht and unfinished sorts from 225. Gd. upwards. Prime ewes realised from 28s. to 325., medium 21s. to 2<s.» light and aged from 17s. 6(1. upwards. . . Lambs—A large yarding, numbering head of fair quality. Competition was good, and freezing buyers were operating. Prices wore about on a par with last week’s rates, ranging from 21s. Gd. to 355. a head. . . FaU Cattle.—-A largo yarding of mixed quality, the total number penned being 185 head. There was a good demand at the commencement of the sale, and prices wore somewhat firmer thnn week’s rates. Primo bullocks realised from Xl9 10s. to .£2O 10s medium .£l6 to 4)18 li"ht nnd unfinished sorts from Xl3 10s. upwards. Prime heifers realised from .£l5 153. to £l7 17s. 6d„ medium .£l3 to .£l4 155., light and aged from JCB 10s. upwards. Store Cattle.—A large yarding, was offered of varied grades of quality. Owing to the continued dryness of the season, would-be purchasers were somewhat afraid to operate, and in consequence late values were not maintained, the sale Was of a very dragging nature. Pigs.—A full yarding of mixed sorts was offered. Competition was very slack and late values were not maintained, a reduction of fully 15s. a ’head having' to be accepted in order to effect sales.
