GOVERNMENT HOUSES
PROGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION,
Since taking over the portfolio of Labour, the Hon. G. J- Anderson has inspected the houses that are being fc,ected by the Labour Department m Wellington. He has arranged to leave tor Christchurch to-night, and he will see for himself what the Department is doing in that town. The Minister stated yesterday that he thought the work ot the housing branch was proceeding as veil as could lie expected in view id the shortage of cement and other materials. The houses that were in the hands of the branch were, proceeding quite satisfactorily. _ It has been rumoured in Wellington that the Department would not continue nil its contracts on the scale originally arranged, owing to the financial tion and the need for checking the growth of public expenditure. Answering a question on this point yesterday, the Minister of Labour said that there would be no cancellation of contracts for the completion of houses in hand.
