WAIRARAPA NOTES

During the quarter ended December 31, 103 cases were dealt with at the Mas'terton Magistrate’s Court. Arrests totalled 22, and criminal summonses 81. The annual picnic of the Masterton railway staff was held on the Solway show grounds on Saturday. The weather was ideal, and a programme of sports events was carried out. Mr. G. R. Sykes, M.P., briefly addressed the picnickers, and complimented them on the success of the gathering. During the year just ended, 350 births, 145 marriages, and 115 deaths were registered inMasterton. The registration? in 1919 were 311, 85, and 112 respectively. During the past quarter, Hie registrations were: —Births, 92; marriages, 31; and deaths, .25. The recently-formed Wairarapa Polo Club held its first meeting sn Mr. W. Howard Booth’s property, at Carterton, on Saturday. Some interesting games were played under the supervision of Mr. K. M'Bean Stewart. The players included Captain Gage-Williams, Messrs. Roy Barton (vice-captain), Vallance (2), Eric Riddiford, S. L. P. Free. S.M., Cairns, J. Strang, IV. H. Booth, and Baird. Afternoon tea was presided over by Mesdames C. Bennett, IV. Howard Booth. Roy Barton, and Gage-IVilliams. Greytown business people decided to observe Saturday as the half-holiday if all Wairarapa do so.
