LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

ST. JOSEPH'S ORPHANAGE ■ Sir,—My attention, has been called, to, a further communication, this time from a Mr. P. J. Smyth, regarding certain leged statements or mine in connection with St. Joseph's Orphanage. In repiy thereto, permit mo to inform your correspondent that the appearance of such al•( leged statements in tlio journal named by" him is no evidence whatever of their accuracy. Some writers have a very vivid imagination, and the writer in ques-i tion was evidently at his best when penning tho' article. The following extract from the confirmed minutes of tho Charitable Aid Committee' will how misinformed your correspondent is, as to any denial having been previously made;— "Tho chairman (Mr. Petherick) brought under the notice of the committee ■ an article appearing in the 'Hutt Valley Independent,' attributing to tbe.chairmaiij other members of the committee, and tho Charitable Aid Superintendent certain statements in regard to the admission of ' children to private denominational orphanages. The chairman informed tlio committee that ho had not made tho statements attributed to him. Particulars of the article were read, .and after further remarks.by the chairman and others the matter dropped." I, therefore; leave tho readers otj'Qiir paper to pass their own Judgment upon, the tactics adopted by Mr. Smyth and his confreres—i ain, etc., GEORGE PETHERICIv, Chairman Charitable Aid Committeu.i November 18, 1920.
