'■ * — POLICE OFFICER'S SEARCH TOR A: HOUSE. Chief-Detective Ward, wlio was transferred from Napier to Wellington in January last, found considerable uitticulty in Retting house accommodation here. However, in May he managed to rent, a four-roomed liouse in Pipitea Street. In July the house was purchased bv Mr. and Mrs. Hooper, and the chief-detective was asked to quit, but he was unable to get another house, and was obliged to stay on- Ywtenjar. Mrs. E. Hooper (for whom Mr. M. I. Luckw nppenred) proceeded the detective to Tecovcr possession of the tenement. Mr.-C. A. L. Treadwell.who appeared for the police officer, pointed out that the chief-detective was expected by the Department to live in a respectable locality and within reasonable) distance of the Central Police Station, becanso lie was liable to sudden calls nifjut and day. He was-paying £1 per month for the place, and had made every effort possible to get another house. It was admitted bv counsel for plantiff that the cliief-detectivo had done everything possible to vacate the place, but his clients were an elderly couple living in rooms, and desired possession. The Magistrate (Mr. F. K: Hunt, S.M.) said It was a humiliating position for the chief-dotec-tive to be placed in,- and that the Department should do something for its officers. He offered to adjourn the case for a month, but the chief-detective said that he did not wish to have the matter hanging over his head, and preferred that an order should be made. Ail order for possession wa? accordingly granted. - ,
