Dr. J. N. Waddell,' of Tiraaru, has been appointed house surgeon at the Palmerston North Hospital. The doctor was recommended for the post by the Dean of the Otago .Medical School. Ho will take up his duties in about a fortnight's time.

The funeral of tho late Mr. Jonu Welsby took place, yeatorday morning. Canon Feilden Taylor conducted' the service at tlho graveside. Only near relatives were present, including. Mr. Vaughan Welsby, youngest son, Mr. Carl Engstrom (Masterton), son-in-law, and Mr. P. de J. Clere. brother-in-law. The late Mr, Welsby wasi educated at Wellington College, and was a very clever nuthematioian. Ho married *ho eldest daughter of tho late Henry Clere, M.A., formerly vicar of Twickenham. Dr. C. B. Welsby, at preecnt in England, is a »on of the deceased.

Bruce, who has been Assistant Director of Medical Services for several months, has relinquished that position to go to India to join the Indian Army Medical Corps. He will leave Dunlin on Tuesday. Mr..N. D. Hood, who has been appointed Assistant Chief Inspector of Machinery, Surveyor of Ship?, etc., joined I'ho Marine and Inspection of Machinery Department in Feoruary, 1903. Mr. Hood received his initial training in the Soho Engineering Works, in .Nelson, during which two iron vessels were constructed, viz., the s.s, Wakatu and tho sailer Dim.
