CHINAMAN CHARGED WITH FORGERY.

iMr. J. S. Evans, S.M, heard the police cases m the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A Chinese youth named Thomas Ching Ting, 20 years of age, described ■ as a seedsman, was charged that on or rbout August 7, at Wellington, he forged the name of \V. Kong Lee to a cheque on the Union Dank for £20, and caused Janet M. Donald to-act upon same. At the request of Chief-Detective Ward the accused •was remanded to Wednesday next, and bail was allowed' in £75, and one surety of £75. •'CITE, CASES. ■Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., dealt with the civil cases, and gave judgment for plaintiff by default in the following :-E J Shackleford and Co. v. W. Impey, £10, costs £1 3s. 6d.; Commercial Agdncy and Cycle and 'Motor Supplies, Ltd., v> J Leonard, £11 4s. Cd„ costs £1 10a. £d.-'same v. W. Petry, £33 3s. lid., costs £3 14s. . Stanton and Evans, Ltd., garage proprietors (Mr. W. L. Rothcnbcrg) proceeded against the trustees in the estate of the late Edward Balcombc Brown (Mr. J F B Stevsnson) to recover £46 ss. 4d.', a «laim for repairs done to the gears of the tote Mr. Brown's car in 1917. For the defence it was stated that when the car'was delivered, after the repairs, to Mrs. Brown, it would not run at all, so she immediately called, in an expert toi teat it. The expert drove the car round Oriental Bay, and put it at the Roseneath Hill, where the gears at once gave way and broke. This, it was alleged, was due to the faulty workmanship of the plaintiffs, and consequently payment of the amount claimed was refused. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate gave udgment for plaintiff for £23 ss. Id., fnd costs £4 Zs. BREACHES OP AWARDS. The Inspector of Awards (Mr. R. T. Bailey) succeeded in actions beforo Mr., W. G. Riddell, 6.M., against several persons who had committed breaches of various industrial awards. M. M'Enroe, licensee of the Thistle Inn Hotel, admitted through his solicitor, Mr.. L. Ed- ' wards, that he had not paid award rates to Kate M'Ginn, owing to some nisunderstanding, though full payment of arrears had since been made. M'Enroe wn» fined 10s., and the. employee was fined a similar amount for failing to claim the award rates. N. Clout, manager of the Te Aro Meat Company, charged with having, employed a man on a half-holidny. explained that a whole holiday falling just previously to the statutory half-holi-day had brought about a rush,of work, and tho- employment of the man could not bo avoided If the public were to.be served. Clout was fined £1. N. Oharman, a builder, was fined £1 for employing a non-unionist without' having given proper notice to tho secretary of the union. For a similar offence H, Stanford was hned 10s.
