Mrs. R. N. Jones and Miss Jones, of Gisborne, are visiting Wellington, and are staying at the Grand Central Hotel, Cuba Street.

The nnnual meeting of tho Pioneer Club is to bo held at the club next Wedday "evening at 7.30 o'clock. Various matters will be discussed, and the election of officers will tako place. It is hoped there will be a good attendance of members.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Ballachey, wife of tho Rev. W. Ballachey, took place in St. Mary's. churchyard, Karon, on Tuesday morning. The service in tho church was conducted by the Rev. G. 1. Woodward and the Rev. W. Fancourt and at the graveside by the Bishop of Wellington. Several others of tho clergy attended, and there were also amongst tlioso present a number of very. old friends of the deceased, who remembered her when the Rev. W. Ballachey was vicar of ICarori some forty-five years ago. Tho series of health talks at the Y.W.C.A. will be continued this evening, when Dr. Fenwick will address the members, his subject being "Dietectics." Tho late Mrs., C. J. Harris, wife of Lieutenant Harris, New Zealand Mounted Rifles, of Oakura, who died on Friday, was n military war worker in England. For three years she served at Victoria Station, part of the time in the Y.M.C.A., where her piano playing was greatly appreciated by the soldiers, and partly serving at the Free Buffet, supplying refreshments to the troops travelline to and from France. She also frequently helped in tho Red Cross and hospital work in the district of Belgrann (London), and in 1918 was decorated with tho Order of the Red Triangle. Many in Wellington will remember Miss Madge Surtces, a soubrette actress who first appeared here with the "Madame X." Company. Subsequently she figured as Sunday in a revival ol the play of that name, and still later came to New Zealand with Tait's "Peg o' My Heart" Company, and during Miss Allgood's absence from the cast through lllneds played "Peg" without the. audience being any tho wiser. Miss Siirteos. has now turned up as tho winner of a prizestoiy in the New York "News. 1 ~ gt'ory is called ,"Tho Ace of Hearts. . \ delightful evening's entertainment, held in connection with' .the E.O.W. Circle of the Pioneer Club took place at the club last evening. Dr. Agues, Benlie't presided, and there was a good attendance of members and,friends. 'Ihs reading of a one-act play, 'The 'lwelvePound Look" (J. M. BarricVby the Keiburn Readers formed' tho, first part.ot the programme, the stage directions being read by Mrs. Vickerman, and the cnaraeters being taken by Mrs. Coleridge, Miss Coleridge, and Mr. H. E. Nichohs. This was greatly enjoyed by the numcnce, as also was tho singing of Miss Eileen Driscoll, Mr. Burne, and Mr. Itishworth. the two last-named also singing duets as well as solos. After supper had been served another play was read by the Kelburn 'Readers, "The Maker or Dreams," a very charming phantasy by Oliver Dowell. Is this the characters-, were taken by Miss Vickerman, Mr. Nicholls, and Mr. von Haast, each taking it in' turn to read the 6tage directions. Altogether the evening was one of tno most enjoyable yet hold in connection jvich the circle. ■ The annual dance of the Wellington Ladies' Hockey Association was held in St, Peter's Schoolroom last evening, and was most successful. Lycopodium and coloured drapery formed the decorations, nnd over the stage was a design carried out with hockey clubs. Spring lowers decorated tho supper tables in the adjoining room, nnd the singe was comfortably furnished, for tlie chaperons. Tito committee comprised the Misses Nolan, Keogh, Yorston, Price, . Grant, Duley, Dick, Messrs, Gnifen, Devonport, Tandy, Manning, and Ginger, iho chaperons were: Mesdames Gnuon, \\ lllinins, Washington, and Simon. Miss L. Skinner was tho secretary, inert' was a good, attendance of dancers, and excollent arraugemonts wore mcule to socuro tho enjoyment of all present, fe Miss K. Redmond, Wairarapa, is at present visiting friends m Chnstchurch. Mre. Knowsley and her daughter -returned by tho Niagara after a lengthy European tour.
