Red Cross Committee,

A meeting of the Wellington Red Cross Committee was held in the Mercer Street depot yesterday afternoon, Mr. T. Young (rinirmait) presiding. ~:.Tlie Chairman announced' that permanent premises had been bought in- Dixon Street, and it was anticipated that the society would move into them in the be-' ginning, of September. A sub-committee, consisting of tho Mayoress' (Mrs. J.- P. Luke). Mesdames 'M. Myers, Blundell, tho hon. secretary (Miss Sybil Nathan), Mr. Hamilton, and Mr. Kinniburgll, was set up to report upon- necessary alteratious or repairs. Mr. Hamilton and Mv Kiuniburgli wero. appointed another 6ulk committee to tako'charge of tho matter in connection with the tenancy, of the buildings, as there would bo Other, tenants besides the Eed Cross Society.. The sub-committee that had been appointed': to go into the. matter of making recommendations for tho nur'ses's scholarships which would enable Now Zealand qualified nurses to take up further courses of 6tudv in London reported that there had not been sufficient tinio to communicate with the other centres and make tho matter fully known, and that it should he held over till next'year. This was agreed to. Correspondence between Surgeon-General M'Gavin and tho secretary in regard to the matter of cither purchasing or leasing 11 property in tne Wellington district to bo used as a Home for Incurablo Service Men \vas read. It was the opinion of the society that it was not desirablo to acquire permanent assets, but they were prepared to consider any suitable place that could bo leased as a home for this purpose. 'Further correspondence from Surgoon-General M'Gavin related to tho sum of <£1208 left ovei from the Countess of Liverpool Fund (Central Society), and which Lady Liverpool had considered might bo expended upon permanent recreational objects for homes for incurable men. This, if dr videj between the four centres, would mean a sum of .£302 for each. Being under the impression that it was not the intention of tho Wellington society to establish a homo at all for incurable ca6es. General M'Gavin had suggested that the total be divided -between, tho three centres that- already had their homes-Auckland, Chrisfch'urch,; and Dunodin. It was decided to luform Surgeon M'Gavin, however that with the iWellington society -leasing its own property, the_ original sum of .£302 would bo retained. . Correspondence and cablegrams which had passed between Mr. Chisholm and the New Zealand Red Cross representative at Home and the New Zealand executive relating to the. Starving Children of Eastern Europe Fund, were read. The imperative need of help was stressed, and flie committee decided to givo iCKKIO to the fund. A letter waa read from Dr. Wylie, Inspector of Hospitals, in which ho pointed out that a portion of King George V Hospital at Rotorua is to bo devoted to tho treatment cf crippled children, of whom there are many in the Dominion at the present time, and asking if the socitty would help with the work. It was suggested that this help tfitould be given by providing certain articles of equipment., which wera enumerated, and by providing the oflicer in charge of tho hospital with a small 6uui of money monthly (say XlO to b«gin with), by means of which the matron and himself could provide entertainment and amusement for the children who happened to bo in the hospital. i It waa considered, that this work earns within tho peaco time work of tho Red' Cross whioh had been mapped out at tho Geneva Conference of the Red Cross League, and the committee agreed to assist in the direction laid down by Or. Wylie. , .i. A grant of JC4M was made to tho Waipukurati Red Cross in answer, to a Tequest for further money to bo expended upon eoldier patients. In answer to a request from tho Red Cross Society in Masterton for a grant or money to assist in the repatriation of a Soulier, it was resolved by the committee that while sympathising fully with tho case mentioned, the . society could not see its way to make grants to returned soldiers, as its funds would not permit of sucn undertakings. A letter of thanks was read frpm Colonel Cunningham, of tho Sn'vnttoii Army, in charge of <v leper station in tho 'fecli East Indies, thanking the society for five cases of bandages which hud been sent for tho furtherance, of tho work there.
