CITY'S MILK SUPPLY

HOWE'S LANE COTTAGES TO BE DEMOLISHED.

'['he Milk Committee reported to the City Council last evening that as from August 0 the price of cream would be increased from lis. to 13s, per gallon. The retail price would be 23. 3d. per nint The committee recommended that authority be granted to tho City Solicitor to take steps to eject the ten»nte-of the cottages at How'b Lane, and that ftie cottages be demolished, to allow ot the temporary eitamuon now required at the milk station. The committee reported:— . "That they have authorised tho assistant general manager to give addresses on the milk question at meetings to be held in tho city, under the auspices ot the various "women's societies concerned with the welfare of the children. "That an ample supply of-millt and cream is now available at the municipal milk depot." Councillor P. Eraser Tatsed questions about the tenants that were proposed to be "iected from tho old cottases in HowSVEane, which Councillor Bennett replied to. " Councillor Eraser moved as an amendment that the matter of the ejectioh of the tenants b? referred *oack to the cotamittee on the ground that their eviction would aggravate th& housing trouble'. Councillor Norwood said that members of the committee were just as sympathetic as Councillor l'Yaser towards houseless people, but at tho present time the machinery on which the whole of the city was depending for its milk was working up to its limit, and it was absolutely necessary that tho provision referred to should be made. If Councillor Eraser were to sec the places mentioned after Tain ho would agree that from a health point of view alone it would be a good thing to get the people out of these shanties. • Councillor J. 0. Shorland paid, he'was surprised to hear Councillor Fraser raise hiu voice against the proposal. Tho matter had been before the committee for the past, three months. He was sorry that Councillor Eraser neglected his duties to such an extent as not to have attended tb:e meetings. On being put, Councillor Erasers amendment was lost, the "Labour Three" being the only members to vote for it.
