Sir C. Kinloch-Cooke, M.l\, asked tlio Under-Secretary for the Colonies in the House of Commons whether in view ctf the misunderstanding that, prevails both inside and outside Parliament, as lo the designations Dominion and Colony, he would explain the official meaning attaching to the.se tonus. Colonel Amory, in a written ;riswor, said: Tho term "Dominion" is usod olllcially as a convenient abbreviation of tho complete designation "self-governing Dominion." Tho term "Colony" is an abbreviation of the ollicial designation "Colony not possessing responsible Government," and includes all such colonies w.hothev or not thoy ]>osscss an elective Legislature, but does not include Protectorates or Protected States. " It may be convenient to odd that the term "Crawn Colonies" is properly applicable only to thoso colonies in which the Crown retjUQa control of leifiaWaaii.
