LAST YEAR'S WORK. The. expenditure- on scenery preservation last year was only JC7SO, the smallest amount for over fifteen years. The total amount spent under tho Scenery reservation Act since 1901 has been •£90,910. The Act authorised the raising of .£IOO,OOO, and a sum of XOOOO is still in hand.

The number of scenic reserves is now 525, with a total area of 312.075 acres. This includes some of tho finest scenery in New Zealand, and the area is being extended faster than the returns of expenditure indicate.
