SCENERY PRESERVATION
LAST YEAR'S WORK. The. expenditure- on scenery preservation last year was only JC7SO, the smallest amount for over fifteen years. The total amount spent under tho Scenery reservation Act since 1901 has been •£90,910. The Act authorised the raising of .£IOO,OOO, and a sum of XOOOO is still in hand.
The number of scenic reserves is now 525, with a total area of 312.075 acres. This includes some of tho finest scenery in New Zealand, and the area is being extended faster than the returns of expenditure indicate. Last year, for example, tho Maoris agreed to hand over to the Lands Department for scenery preservation purposes a considerable area of land fronting tho shores of Lake Botplti,
