The French, not having received a. reply to thoir ultimatum, have begun a general advance in. the eastern rone of Syria. It is understood that Emir Feisul has appealed to the League of Nations to intervene.—'"The Times." Paris, July 20. The "Temps" states that France, at various times sinoe December last, has tried to secure the friendly cooperation of the Syrian authorities, but the Emir Feisul and his colleagues, yielding to the incitement of the Turkish Nationalists, have deliberately started a hostile policy. They have broken off financial relations with the French zone, have tried to prevent food reaching the French tToops, have repeatedly attacked the French posts, and have replaced chiefs friendly to France by others who are hostile.— Ans.-N.Z.
