THE MAHANA

THE VESSEL FUMIGATED. The immigrants who arrived by tho Mahana have all been dispatched to their various destinations thanks to the efforts of the' officers of the Immigration Department, who have had a worrying time, owing to unexpected developments at tho elevonth hour. The whole of tho cabin luggage was removed on Monday afternoon nnd yesterday morning, and tho holds of the vessel were sealed down and thoroughly fumigated yesterday,, to provide as far as is humanly possiblo against any further infection. It was considered anomalous in some quarters that tho whole of the cabin luggage should have been allowed to be landed, trunks and baskets which had probably been in contact with the fever patients, ■whilst the baggage in the hold, which had not. should be held up for fumigation. It is hoped that the whole of the lugguge in the hold will be landed 10-dfiy. That for other ports will bo sent on by the shipping company, and the rest will bo forwarded as directed by those who lmvo already left for their destinations.
