NATIONAL DEFENCE LEAGUE

• STARTING WITH-1000 LOCAL MEMBERS. That the aims and objects of the National Defence League of New Zealand in favour of maintaining a sound system of defcnce aro • commending themselves to tha general public is shown by tlio fact that it is officially reported that in Wellington city and suburbs alone the lcaguo has just on 1000 members. Considering that this 'has been achieved in a few weeks without any "pushing" by any locally responsible body, tho promoters of the league, who are civilians only, are very hopeful that when the Wellington District Council and branches are established, the league will soon have n stronger membership than any other organisation in .Wellington. It is held that what can be done in Wellington can ako be dono in all other centres of New Zealand, and most encouraging reports are being roeoived. The General Council of the leaguo i 6 concentrating on the formation of the Wellington District Council, which will be responsible for tho establishment of branches and generally conducting tho campaign locally in favour of sound defence. For the purpose of electing the district council (Which, like tho General Council, will bo composcxl 'of ten ■ men and fivo women) a general meeting of Wellington members and intending members of the' league will be held in the conference chamber, Farmers' Institute Buildings, Feathcrston Street, to-morrow night, when it is expected thai there will bo a larjjo attendance. Mr. J. P. Firth, vico-presidont of the league, will preside, and interesting speeches luive been arranged for.
