CARGO CONGESTION

In connection with the cargo congestion problem on the wharves ami the traffic queues which occasionally figure along the waterfront, the question was again before the Welington Chamber of Commerce yeßterday afternoon in tho form of a letter from a local firm which had experienced delav and difficulty in getting goodß away by the Hippie last week. Mr. W. S. Wilson said ho had looked closely into tho matter, and had questioned the carters in tho aucue that nai formed in connection with the Hippie. 11 o had come to the conclusion that a solution of the problem might be arrived at bv providing one ehed at Taranaki Streef and two Bheds at Fryatt Quay for the reception of such cargo, so that the carta could unload and get away. Ho would not be positive that such an arrangement would effect :i cure, but he was iprctty well satisfied that it would. It was no use coming to tho chamber eery month and going over the same ground; he thought they should go into tho matter thoroughly, and in order, to do so ho thought they should aippoint a suo-com-J.fr. T. Munt siiid that thn only thing against Mr. Wilson's suggestion as to tho shedfi wa ß the extra coßt that would bo entailed in unloading and londmg tho goods in tho sheds. The only remedj; for the trouble was some arrangement whereby the cargo from different snippcis would be received at,certain times. Something of the sort had been arranged in connection with' the handling of coal. There had been times when bis men had to wait for hours to get n load of coal from a hMd's side, but under, the i.ew arrangement, which only came into force that dav, his carta only went alongside at certain hours, say at 9 a.m.. 10 a.m., 11 a,m„ and so on, whilst dealers carts went in between. So far the new idea «ecmed to be working out satisfactorily, and if the same principle could be applied to tho shtonifnt of "outward cargo, better rcsultß might be gained. ~,,„„ ... The chairman (Mr. A. F. Eoberts) thought the idea, of forming a sub-comrcitteo was a good one, and ho proposed that Messrs. W. S. Wilson, T. Munt. W. N. Cuthbertson and Ciptain Peterson form the subcommittee. This was agreed to,
