POULTRY NOTES

Small oggß are the source of. great annoyanco to housewives, "What la this in the egg-oup?" is riot a remark they like to hear; yet it eggs are wanted the housewife has to take what she can got, and it Is no wonder, seeing how prevalent tho small egg now iB, that she Is now, more than ever, a strong advocate for the selling of eggs by weight. Thero can be no doubt but that thd orazo for numerical records is accountable to a great extent for the small eggs, and it ' in to be hoped that the present insistence on the part of the promoters of egglaving competitions that 2oz. eggß only will count will act as a corrective. It 1* however, only o small percentage or breeds which can he penalised at competitions, and it is the produce of their stock which is now in the hands of poultry breeders generally, which predominate in marketed eggs. Though the small eg? is largely a question of strain, still improvement might be effected in szo without much loss in number by special feeding. Tho opinion is held I>y Some that tho small egg is due, to some ex"tent, to'the' dry-mash method, of feeding. ■'It Ms argued,-that we get bigger birds ■by feeding wet mash, and that, such being the'caßO, it is reasonable to expeot tnat it would influence tho size, of the teei also. It would bo interesting to Know what breeders think on this question. - Those who buy eggs for sitting should -take care, if they have travelled from » distance, that they aro rested on theU 1 sides for at least 24 hours before being put under the hen or into the artificial iiicubator. Breeders will not forget, to ', do this if they once realise that each egg '.contains a very dollcate.organism wtiwn may have been a little upßet, as stronger "organisms" do not hesitate to aoknow ' , ledge they are, by a lon* Journey. If bought' sittings aro very valuable It ' is safer to place them under a hen for • at least a week than into an incubator, for it iB eenorally acknowledged by those who have ,bad experience that the hen 19 better at starting the germs than is the machine. . . uk Striotly new laid eggs.often hatch out on the twentieth day,, and stahregM on tho twenty-second, i.e., a day earlier or a day late, according to whether they are absolutely fresh or on the:stale side. It is doubtful whether in one, farm out of 100, notwithstanding all the teachings of Government experts, egg-laying competitions, etc, the proprietors give an early morning or a late afternoon masn to their noultry. The farmer u a rule laughs at the idea of taking any special interest in the fowls, and leaves them to. eet whatever they can by foraging, plus perhaps a feed of erain thrown some odd time by his wife or daughter, and probably it is due to negleot in thirrcspect, that so few eEgs come from the farmers when theprices are high... - A daily paper in England published the following letter from a correspondentr-"6ir,-I have eight White Lerfiorns which started laylnir in October, 1919, they laid 279S eggs. These, after paying all-ex-senses, gave mo a, profit; of £.1Z 0». 3d. , The - fowlhouse is 4ft. wide and eight yards long, with a boarded floor. Several readers • sent cutings of this letter to j "Poultry," and one of them remarfced:. "Not bad for an amateur, sounds more like a professional flah story, an average •of 350 eggs from eight birds.
