OBITUARY

SURGEON-GENERAL GORGAS. (Rec. July 5, 5.5 p.m.) London, July 5. Surgeon-General Gorgas has died in London. The King recently visited the hospital and conferred tho knighthood of St. Michael and St. George on him in recognition. of his services in regard to malaria—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. rWilliam Crawford Gorgas, who was bom in 1854, was the son of BrigadierGaneral Gorgas, Chief of Ordnance in the Confederate States Army. He gained theM.D. degree in 1879, and in the following year was appointed surgeon in the United States Army. He was chief Banitary officer of Havana from 18118 to 1902. He applied methods of combating yellow fever which eliminated that disease from Havana, and in recognition of this work he was in 1003 appointed, by special Act of Congress, Assistant-Surgeon-General. In 1011 he was appointed Surgeon-General in tho United States Army with the rank of brigadiergeneral, and the following year ho was given tho rank of major-geneniJ. ' General Gorgas had recently begun extens'vo snnitary improvements in Peru undor a five-year contract with tho Peruvian Government, involving an expenditure of 100,000,000 dollars. The work included providing Lima and thirty other cities w'th fresh water, drainage, street improvements, garbage disposal plants, and other municipal advantages. Payia, a maritime town of some importance, with petroleum wells near by, was to be nest royed and rebuilt in order to stamp out yellow fevor, which has long infested it. General Gorgas left Lima at tho boginning of April, to go to West Africa via Belgium, and was to return to Peru jn January next. He was evidently overtaken by his fatal illness on reaohing London,]
