THE SESSION
PARLIAMENT MEETS ON THURSDAY. The first. session of New Zealand's twentieth Parliament will open -this week. This Houbb : of Representatives will meet on Thursday for the election of a Speaker. The re-election of Sir Frederick Lang is assured. Tho memIwa of the two Houses will assemble in the Legislative Council Chamber on Itiday afternoon to hear the Governor-Gen-eral's Speech. The now House of Representatives, according to the election classification, contains V Government supporters, 20 Liberal Oppositionists, 8 official Labour members, 3 Independent Labour members, and 2 Independents. A session of at least five months' duration is expected. The Government has much business to place 'before the House, and members are likely to take more time over their work than ha 6 been their habit in recent years. _ During the war years, under the National Government, most of the Government's business was treated as urgent, and lengthy debates were infrequent. Last year's session was conducted under peace conditions, but it started late owing to the . absence of Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward at the Peace Conference, and its end was hastened by tho approach of the general election.
