Some timo ago a request was made to the Government for "assistance towards the improvement of the. boat harbour for fishing bails at Kaikburtt. It was urged at the time that if docent protection worn afforded to the fishing craft there, a good industry could bo developed, and that there was keen demand for fish in markets in-Christchurch and Wellington, which could be supplied from tho fleet at Kaikoura. Last year there was a vote on the Estimates intended to provide for certain improvements—the removal of rocks from the bay and tho building of a now slip-way. Tho fishing people have now asked for other improvements, notably the building of a halftido wall to protect the anchorage from prevailing weather.' The Minister of Marinrf has advised the parties conconifld that he will direct that tho vote of lust year shall bo expended for the specified purpuses for which ■ it was pnsscd, but that the other improvements will have to be considered in connection with tho Estimates for tho present year.
