ANNUAL MEETINGS OF HOUSEHOLDERS

THE NEW COMMITTEES

The annual meetincs of householders fof the election of school-committees for the ensuing y.ar -were held last uisht.

BERIIAMPOItE SCHOOL.

There was a larie attendance of householders at the infants' schoolroom, Derhampore, Mr. if. T. Bailey presiding.

The repprt or the headmaster dir. P. Bennett) stated that during the cast 18 months there had been 22 chances on the teaching stafT. The classes were muc!i larger than 'desirable, and if two moro assistants were appointed this state ■of thine? would be relieved, but the nverapo attendance according to the regulations would not nermit of those appointments boiiiß made. If the needs of the classes were the detcrminins factor instead of the average attendance it would be tr.ucli better for the education of the children. Dr. l'aterson. with her efficient nursinc staff, visited the school for tho purpose of flndin.tr defects in the children, and many parents would know tho benefits that accrued from these visits. A new feature in connection with tho scholars had been instituted by the Education Department, a specialist haying started a-class for children who had- dofectivo speech.

The report was adopted.

A resolution was passed, heartily contrratulatiiiff the headmaster and staff on the manner in which they had devoted themselves to tho teaching of the children of tho district.

A unanimous vote of thanks was accorded to the outu'oinc committee for its work durintr the year.

Tho followini committee was elected:— Messrs. E. P. Amooup, It. T. Bailey. E. \V. Kurd, 6. W. Key, B. Warwick.' W". Husband, ir. P. Gladiwr. W. E. Gilbert Eon. and B B. Vfatson. Jlr. Key was' appointed chairman and Itr. Burd secretary. BROOKLYN. There was a larre gathering at tli# Brooklyn School, and Mr. A. J. \VTiita (chairman of tho committee) presided. The chairman briefly referred to the need of further accommodation at the school. He sold that the outgoing committee had done all in its power to net the school enlarged, but without success. It was decided to instruct the incoming committee to continue to provide tho children with hot cocoa for lunch during tho winter'

Messrs. Kennedy, Glover. Tibbs, Tlietc, ana Sievers wero appointed to wait on tlie Minister of Education to request an extension of the school buildings and larger nlayerounds.

On behalf of the outgoing committee Mr. White movid: "(1) That the school ago should be extended, and'that compensatory home allowances be granted to parents whoso children are required t.o be kept- at ■ school, after tho ago of 14, when such children would otherwise (owing to financial circumstances of the par. ents) be sent to work; (2) that -35 children be tho maximum in any claSB under the charge'Of one teacher; (3) that tho teacher's remuneration should be fixed according to tho ability of the teacher and not by the size or grade of the school, and that such salaries bo paid as will encourage the most. able to enter and remain in the service." The motions were oarricd. •

A hearty vote of thanks to the City Council for the loan of bookß for the school library, was passed. The headmaster explained that tho books wero changed every ycßr. Votes of thanks were nassed' to the headmaster and stall, and the outgoing committee. . The following were elected oil the committee;—A. J. White, A. Turner, E. B. S. Hill, A. E. Mann, E. W. Smolt, 0. V. Hotcroft, J. H. Whittaker, G. N. Evans, and W. Perkins. All the Labour candidates wero defeated. TB. ARO. Mr. D. R. Lawlor presided over tho meeting held in connection with To Aro School district, at which there was an attendance of about 150 householders. Ten nominations were received, and tho following, all of whom wero on the Labour ticket, wore elected: Messrs. L. Hennessey, S. A. Griffiths, C. W. Tanner, J. Duyer. P. Haines, S. A, Griffiths,' J. Coulter, W. Hart, and J. Hyland. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, Mr. Hennessey was re-elected chairman, and J.fr. Griffiths re-elected secretary and treasurer.

A resolution was unanimously passed demanding tliat the Government take immediate steps to raise the salaries of teachers and generally improve their conditions of. vrorlt with a view to attracting tho beet talent available*.

MOUNT COOK. At tho Mount Cook meeting of householders there was a large attendance, Mr, W. E. Fuller, chairman of tho old committee nresidine. ' On the motion of Mr I?. Simp Eon it was dccided to draw th" attention of tho Minister of Education to tho doDlornH") state of the Mount. Cook School buildings and tho conditions • under which teachers and scholars had to work, and request that immediate stens bo taken to procure a suitable sito in. a sunny position for the speedy erection of a now school.-
