UNREGISTERED BARMAID

NATIONAL HOTEL CASE. ■Reserved decision was delivered by Mr. E. Page. S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday ill tlie cases against Frederick Hilton, licensee of the National 'Hotel, and Jessie Jackson, barmaid employed at the hotel, for breaches of the Licensing Act. The charge against Hilton was that he employed an unregistered barmaid (the defendant ilessie Jackson), and Jacfcon was charged with having aided him in his action.

Hilton admitted that he had employed Jackson, but said that be knew her by the name of another woman, M'Alpine, who was n duly registered barmaid. Jackson had signed the hotel books with the name M'.'Upine.

His Worship h<*ld that Hilton had not made all the inquiries which could reasonably have been expected of him. Both defendants would bo convicted. In respect of the charge relating to the police visit on November 29 last, Hilton was fined o£s and costs; and on the charge relating to the visit on December 2, he was ordered to pay costs 7s. Jackson was fined ,£5 and costs on each of two informations.
