BRITISH COAL INDUSTRY
FINANCES INVESTIGATED. (Rec. February 12, 8.35 p.m.) London, February 12. In accordance with a promise made by Mr. Lloyd George to the Miners' Federation, the report of an accountant appointed by the Government to investigate the finances of the coal industry has been issued. The report finds that the estimates on which an increase of 6s. per ton and a subsequent reduction of 10s. per ton were based were reasonable, but that the revenuu was underestimated to the extent of about thirty millions sterling due to undervaluation, of exports' .and bunkers. Tho report considers that an increaso of 3s. per ton instead of 6s. would havo sufficed, and estimated that there will be a-sur-plus on March 31 next of six millions sterling, whereas tho miners estimated tho net profits to be fifty-four million sterling—Aus.-N.i!.
