CANTERBURY MARKETS

Br Tjleeraph.—l"re»» A/uoolatlon. Christchurch, February fi. There has been a fair amount of business in new season's oats. The keen North Island inquiry for Algerian oats has slackened somewhat, sales having been recorded of good bright seed at ss. at country stations. As immediate requirements have been filled in the north, there is little likelihood of this figure being exceeded in future business. North Island merchants are not disposed to trade very extensively at the figure quoted. A fair amount af Cartons is coming in, and has been purchased on a basis of is. 3d. to is. Gd. for particularly fine samples at country stations. Merchants are not being rushed at 'a turn-over price on their values, and purchases are largely speculative. Some are asking up to ss. at country stations, but there is no business at this figure. Feed chaff is in keen inquiry, and purchases have been made at .£7 10s. to .£8 at country stations, but there is very little available. Now chaff is worth JX ss. at wayside stations. Barley is making its appearance in considerable quantities. Thero have been some excellent yields—in some cases over 70 bushels to tho the sample is exceptionally good. Business so far has been between growers and brewers, with fairly wide ranges, but 7s. Gd. at country stations about represents the current quotations. Cocksfoot Ims cased somewhat, although values are still up to Is. Id. for good clean undressed samples. Three shipments of dressed Danish cocksfoot' arrived in Auckland last week and 6old on a basis of Is. 3fd. per lb., which forecasts an easing of local values. Onions are coming to hand, and last week were even worth JJII at country stations. Tho increase in supplies is reducing values, and ,-E!) a ton repiwents to-day's market. There are no new season's potatoes worth speaking of ,on tho market:. Limited business has been done at £1 ss. to JJ7 10s. at country stations for March and April delivery.
