BROKEN COOK STRAIT CABLE
Tho Pacific Cablo Company's cable steamer Iris has returned to Wellington from Cook Strait, where she has been engaged on repair work in connection with a broken cablo (No. 2), tho shoru end of which lands at White's Bay in Marlborough. Tho break was near the shore, but when it was picked up it was found to be worn so thin by friction on the rocks and chemical action (which is always prevalent in Cook Strait) that it had to bo let go "S ain > anA tll(i lris returned to port for n further supply of cable, as tho piece to ho spliced in will have to be much longer than was ct.ntemplated. The fact that one cablo across tho Strait is out of commission is not in tho least degree interfering with tho telegraph service between the two islands.
