PETONE-HUTT BOROUGH EMPLOYEES

UNIFORM WAGES AND HOURS RECOMMENDED. Tho Petone Borough Council on Monday nisfht received the report of tho conferonce held by representatives of Petono and.Lower Hutt Councils last Tuesday toSnrranso uniform hours, pay, and holidays for employees (outsido staffs) of both councils. Petono was represented bv Councillors Churchouso, Cook, \ and Hav, and the borough engineer (Mr. Oowie), and Lower Hutt by Councillors Hardy.. Hobbs, and Mcldrnm, and tho engineer (Mr. E. A. Gumbley).

Particulars of tho rates of p/y, etc., of both boroughs wero submitted and compared, and the following recommendations were passed for the approval of tho councils:—

That after a period of twelve months any man employed in the usual works of the borough, excluding drainage, water supply schemes, and tho like, should be deemed to be on tho permanent staff, but should be subject to apnointment and dismissal by the borough engineer or other officer in charge, provided, however, no man should be engaged upon or qualify for tho permanent staff who is over 40 years of age.

That the wages of the permanent staff, including drivers, bo three pounds eighteen shillings per week for a uniform week of forty-seven hours, and that drivers bo required to bo on the job at tho timo the men aro ready to start work.

That the permanent staff receive full nav for all statutory holidays, and, in addition, after one year's service, Seven (lavs' annual holiday, and after ten years' service fourteen days' annual holiday on full pay. _ _ That for purposes of determining sickpay each case be considered on its merits bv the council concerned. That the question of supplementing the amount'of accident pay an employee was entitled to under the various Workers'" Cnmoensation Acts, be left tp the discretion of the councils, andtlint each case be considered on its merits. The recon-mendations were approved, and if Lower Hutt do the samo tho councils will endeavour to enter into, an agreement with the labour unions concerned, that authority be given to the conference to meet representatives of the.unions with a view to settling tho details of such agreements, "subiect, however, to final ratification by. both councils, such agreements to come into force on April 1. 1920. ■»" ' —
