THE MAORI SEATS

GOVERNMENT CANDIDATES WIN

MESSRS. POMARE, lIENARE AND URU RETURNED

Polling in the Maori electorates took place yesterday. The Hon. A. Ngata (Liberal) was the only candidate for tho Eostern Maori seat, and lie was declared elected unopposed. The contests in the other three seats resulted in wins for the sitting members, who are all supporters of the Government. Small returns still to come cannot affect the results. On being asked by n reporter to-night flow ho would vote on a no-confidence motion, Mr. Uru said; "I am selling my vote to the highest bidder. lam an Independent, and believe this should be the attitude of every Maori member.' "In the past," said Mr. Lru. "I have supported Mr. Massey, and will do so again if he will promise to' give the Maoris what they want. If Sir Joseph Ward will give us a promise that Mr. Massey is not prepared to give, then my vote will go to tho former. That is my attitude." RANGITISEI SEAT By Tclcgrapli—Preeß Association. Marton, TJcceinbor IG. Brigadier-General Meldrum, Liberal candidate for Rangitikei, spoke at Marton last evening. He received a good hearing. The candidate advocated money for workmen's houses being obtained from the Savings Bank. He contended that land aggregation had not teen slapped. Heller provision should liavo been made for putting returned soldiers on the land. He condemned tho tactics .0' the Labour leaders, and fell, chat Labour could not win.
