The popular lectures on astronomy given by Mr. Arthur D.- Carpenter, the astronomer and scientist, are reported to be educative and of popular , interest as well. The.Hon. George Fowlds, former Minister of Education, wrote tho following in praise of the Chautauqua movement after hearing the programme recently in Auckland: "Let me congratulate you 011 the high standard of tho 'Cliautauqua lecturers and the artiste on this season's programme. I have had the pleasure of hearing , the most of them, β-rid I have no hesitation in saying that their tour through New Zealand will not only give high-class enjoyment to thousands, but it will have a fine educative effect. ,It t ill" help to develop th'at\ ' spirit of brotherhood aud goodwill upon ' which alono the' peace and prosperity of tho world can bo established and maintained." The Chautauqua' season will open in the Concert Chamber on Thurs. day.
