A DEFENSIVE PLEA

ORDER TO HIS.GENERALS (By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright (Rcc. Juno 1. 8.15 p.m.) Simla, June 2. A certified copy of the Amir's orders to the commander of the Afghan eastern army, and presumably to tho other commanders, states that "according to information received from, the Government of India," fighting had occurred owing to some misunderstanding with the Indian Government. Ho was, therefore ordering the commander to suspend hostilities until the door of communication was opened. "As we havo no intention of fighting with this old friend of ours, and were obliged to take defensive measures, now tint he nl6o desires peace, we order and command you to keep back your regular troops and tribes, for whom we are responsible, and await further orders." The letter adds: "You should, however, keep in view defensive and offensivo operations while awaiting the result ofthe discussion 'between the Indian and Afghan Governments." The order is dated May 27.—Renter. FURTHER AIR ATTACKS. (Rec. June i, 11.25 p.m.) Simla, June 3. The enemy's forces near Thai were again bombed, and machine-gunned by our airmen. No Afghan troops now remain east of tho Kurram River.—Reuter.
